The seasons in Issan revolve around the planting and harvesting of rice. Rice plants are grown in nursery areas, then the women take a bunch and plant out individual seedlings. This looks backbreaking work but Waree actually enjoys it, working with the other women and chatting together. by Jeremy Holton http://www.jeremyholton.com http://thailand-painting-holidays.com Visit our art and photography guest house in NE Thailand https://plus.google.com/u/0/104359568476968412848?rel=author

'Journey through vines' 50 x 60 cms oil on canvas by Jeremy Holton $1850
This painting is about paint. You could almost say that it is painterly in the way that the oil has been pushed and scraped into marks of many colours that resolve into a Swan Valley landscape. A journey often made but this land is like no other.

The monks do their rounds early in the morning. Each Wat (temple) sends out its own monks. You wait for them to come by the roadside with bare feet. Before they come you wai three times to the ground. Mostly people put food in their alms bowls but they also appreciate other items. Waree sometimes gives them medicines. Mostly they collect rice.
As is often the case in Thailand, you are expected to give what you can afford. If you are poor a few spoons of rice will suffice, but if you are rich you should give more. You will not earn merit giving something which is of no value to you.

Full moon rising over El Questro Landscape - Kimberley painting
Full moon rising over El Questro Landscape - Kimberley painting Oil on canvas 60 by 90 cms $2900
A long time ago there were those who camped by a clear watered babbling stream lost in the bush in El Questro of the Kimberley. In the evening they would climb the hillside and stand looking down on the cobbled river in the valley far below. The moon would rise and they would toast the Kimberley in wine. The birds squawked and the animals rustled in the leaves. The time passed, the landscape remained but the people had gone.
