About the July 2011 Calendar
"‘From Life’ No.28" by Vaughn ButlandNudes Female: Falling into Summer—To accommodate the vacation season, Barebrush guest curator, Vaughn Lewis of MagnanMetz Gallery in Chelsea, selected the art for the July and August calendar in the same session. No stranger to Barebrush, having curated July and August 2009, Mr. Lewis suggested a male/female split between the months. About what he would be looking for, he had this to say:
I will be reflecting on the medium and artistic techniques used to portray all subject matters in the artwork while paying close attention to extraordinary landscapes and/or the atmosphere the artists create in each work of art using the human body.
"Barbadospearl No.2" by Chuck Miller During the selection process, which was intense, Lewis paid close attention to composition and page structure. Here he launches July with a digital collage from Sydney, Australia, TOKYO LUSH by Corrie Ancone. “I want to put the viewer in the right frame of mind. This has atmosphere. It’s a dream-like landscape,” Lewis said about starting the month. His four other Curators’ Choice nominees are: a watercolor from Kamloops, Canada, ‘From Life’ No.28 by Vaughn Butland; an oil from Corsicana, Texas, Barbadospearl No.2 by Chuck Miller; an oil from Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, Reclining 8 by Damian Huntley; and photography from Cochiti Lake, New Mexico, Twisted by Peter King. Of these five artists, Vaughn Butland is making his Barebrush calendar debut and Damian Huntley is seeing his entry, Reclining 8 retire after being in three calendars.
"Reclining 8" by Damian HuntleyFeatured Artist, Sarah Swan, is also seeing her entry, Reclining 2, retire with honors. In addition to Butland, four other artists are making their calendar debut: Leslie Lambert from Palo Alto, CA; Taehyub Lee from New York, NY; Deb Miller from Corsicana, TX; and Guy Delaroque from L’Isle d’Abeau, France
Mr. Lewis commented on the process and the fun it was to select the art. “Extraordinary work!” he exclaimed. “It was absolutely fun.”
