Notes on Alice Neel painting of mother and child

I love the expressions on the mother and child's faces but more importantly is that wonderful curve of her back combined with the almost non-existent chair.  This gives the figures a tremendous feeling of instability as though they are about to rotate.  So the painting projects a feeling of two human beings clutching each other in the face of an imminent catastrophe.
